Meyer Lands Country’s No. 3 ILB

Urban Meyer has landed a commitment from linebacker Trey Johnson (Lawrenceville, Ga./Central Gwinnett) who picked the Buckeyes over scholarship offers from Florida, Tennessee and Penn State.

Johnson announced his decision during the Under Armour All-American Game in Florida.

Johnson committed to Auburn in August of 2011, but later de-committed and then narrowed his choices down to Ohio State, Florida, Tennessee and Penn State before announcing he is a Buckeye at halftime of the Under Armour All-American Game.

Johnson made an official visit to Ohio State the weekend of Nov. 24 when the Buckeyes completed a 12-0 season with a victory over Michigan. That was the only official visit Johnson made.

Johnson is commitment No. 20 for Urban Meyer’s 2013 recruiting class, a class that is expected to number at least 23 come National Signing Day in early February.

Meyer also has commitments from Darron Lee who could play linebacker or safety, as well as Tyquan Lewis who was recruited as a combination defensive end/outside linebacker.

But Johnson is the first “pure” linebacker in Meyer’s 2013 recruiting class. Meyer and his staff hope to add a second “pure” linebacker on Saturday when Mike Mitchell announces his college choice at the Army All-American Bowl.

The 6-foot-2 and 218-pound Johnson is a 4-star prospect in the 247Sports rankings. He is the country’s No. 142 prospect, the No. 3 inside linebacker and the No. 13 prospect in Georgia.

Bill Kurelic breaks down the impact of Johnson's decision to be a Buckeye.
